I start June 3, she said.  It s not a slow job. ItТs active. I donТt like to sit a lot. When they offered me the job, I almost cried.Ф Stready, 19, said her job is something from her dreams. УWhen I think about how I have improved. I just thought I was going to work at Publix. Now, I see I can do something better with my life.Ф It is helping students like Stready live their dreams that drives Collier CountyТs Project Explore program. Project Explore is open to students 18 years and older. It is administered through the Lorenzo Walker Institute of Technology and an adults with disabilities grant. УWe have students ranging in age from 18 to 51,Ф said Anne Fredette, the instructor of the Project Explore program. УThe only common denominator is that they have a disability. It could be something with reading or Down (syndrome) or blindness.Ф Once students enter the program, they are matched with a mentor at Moorings Park, a local retirement community. They do everything from prepare meals for residents or do laundry and change bedding, to working with the physical therapists, leading activities and helping in the business office. УAll we want them to have when they come out of the program is the self-esteem that they can do it. We want to see their quality of life enhanced,Ф said Fredette. УWhen they are matched with mentors, it is often the first time they are not looked at because of their disability, but because of what they can do.Ф Pat Kelsey, who is a supervisor in housekeeping, said the students make perfect employees. УThey want to learn so badly,Ф she said. УOne student that I had learned so fast and so well, I offered him a job. Everything they do, they do the best they can. And it is rewarding to me when they achieve something.Ф Kyle Bedrava said the program has allowed him to discover what jobs he might be interested in. УThis program wasnТt good for me, it was great for me,Ф said Bedrava, who is blind. УThe work experience is excellent. It makes me think about what my dreams can be.Ф David Higgins, who is a mentor to the students interested in working in the kitchen at Moorings Park, said the mentor/student relationship is a two-way street. УWe teach them certain skills and we show them the pride we have in our jobs,Ф he said. УIn six years, I have had four students in the dietary program who have enrolled in culinary school.Ф Higgins said as his students get more proficient in their jobs, he can give them more responsibility, which allows him to do something special for the residents. Higgins said his message to his students, including Matthew Ryerson, who will attend culinary classes at LWIT this fall, is about why chefs do things a certain way. УI want them to know a plate of food is as important to the eyes as it is to the stomach,Ф he said. Fredette said students who enter the program are not promised jobs as part of the program. She said the idea is to give the students skills they need to become more self-sufficient. That said, Fredette said the program is a springboard to classes at LWIT for some students. УWho is better to teach them these skills than the people who do it?Ф she said. In the last five years, the program has helped 96 students, Fredette said. Students are allowed to participate in the program for more than one year, she added. УWe just change their goals for the program (when they come back),Ф she said. Of the 15 students enrolled in the program this year, five students have supported employment, six are returning to the program next year, three will attend classes at LWIT and Stready has employment at Moorings Park. Stready said she liked being part of the program because not only does it help her, but she helps others. УI saw this lady crying and I told her a joke and she smiled,Ф she said.
